Esani
Esani is the umbrella term for all merfolk. Within that, you have Noarunoti (pronounced "noh-war-oo-NOH-tee"), who are from the southern Midsea, and are citizens of the Noarunosd city-state. They are a lithe people, with a medium skin-tone and white markings. Their eyes are usually a bright yellow-green. Contrast this with Iiueuti (pronounced "yee-WAY-oo-tee"), who who are more greenish than their blue-tinted cousins, and have dark markings intead of white, and Northerners, who are predominantly white or pale gray. These people, called White Mariners or Icefolk by esani of the south, are members of various tribes and clans of the frigid northern seas. Larger clans include the Lilklal nation, the Inak nation, and the Nizal and Izluininat tribes. Males of many of these societies are tattooed to distinguish their caste/profession.
Nosdai
The name nosda is used to denote a spirit inhabiting a stone statue. Nosdai come in all shapes, sizes, levels of articulation, and durability. However, there are two kinds of nosdai: Drosnan (lit. "dead person") who is someone who died and was summoned into a nosda shell, and Faithful (Sennin: Gasana), who are shells that come to life spontaneously and have no recollection of a previous life. Drosei are only able to retain their sense of sight and hearing, while Faithful retain all their senses aside from taste. The latter of the two are considered to be secondary citizens, though also dangerous and unpredictable.
All nosdai are made from quartzite, but something about the summoning process makes their bodies far more durable than the natural rock alone. Even stranger is that the carapace of a Faithful is even tougher yet, and their bodies can regenerate like organic tissue, albeit slowly. Faithful soldiers that are injured in combat are often repaired by masons far quicker than if they were left to heal by themselves.
